Barlovento: memory map of Port of Spain

Memory map of Port of Spain, created during the inaugural two month Trans-Atlantic Artists Residency Exchange at Alice Yard, Trinidad and Tobago. Participants were invited to accompany the artist on walks through Port of Spain and surrounding areas and share memories and stories relating to the walk and the area. The final presentation of this work consisted of a live drawing performance, creating a memory map of the walks with the participants. The map was created using ink pigment from Scotland mixed with water from the Caribbean Sea, collected during one of the walks. The ink was contained in inkwells created in collaboration with Scottish artists from Dundee Ceramics workshop and shipped across the atlantic especially for this event, in response to the Scottish made ‘penny inkwells’ found during walks through Port of Spain in colonial era middens. The map was presented alongside audio pieces, pinhole photography and video created in response to the different walks.
